Monday, June 6, 2011 "Progress"

So, this week was a wee bit better. I had roast beef! It was amazing! It was real roast beef! We met a woman named Rebecca Laryea; she's the sister of the owner of the cafe we use near our apartment, and the mother of a guy who's friends with missionaries here. We're trying to teach her - she's always busy so it's very hard - but the few times we can see her, she normally is cooking meat for her chop bar, and she gives us some. It's awesome! We ordered about 2 kg's from her so we can cook it ourselves today; it cost us about GHc 7, which is about $4 or so. It's worth it, this being Ghana; haha.

Also! I got to mow the lawn on Saturday! It was awesome! I never thought I'd be so happy to mow the lawn, but it was amazing. Mission changes a man (Legend of Zorro, anyone?). Granted, I only got to do a small part but it was still awesome.

We had 4 investigators to Church on Sunday, which was awesome. We aren't sure if we'll be able to baptize anyone in June, but July is starting to look good. With prayers and hope, we should be able to pick things up here.

Other odd note: we met a woman named Rita Collins. Her grandfather was Scottish, her father is half-cast, and she and her husband have met missionaries before. They were learning with them in Koforidua for a while (that's up in the bush, somehow) but then got re-stationed in Accra (husband is a police officer). She was happy to meet us, and really liked the teachings. One of her daughters joined us as well, and she was enjoying it also. It was really great; we're hoping to meet the husband soon, and teach the whole family. Who knows? We should be able to baptize the whole family!

We also began teaching our missionary class this week; ended up calling it, simply, Gospel Fundamentals Class, coming from PMG which states we're suppose to teach the fundamentals of the Gospel. Not very creative, but it works; haha. It went well for the first time; the Elders Quorum Presidency really likes it, and they want to use it as a means to teach the Prospective Elders more about the basics of the Gospel, to help prepare them for the Melchizedek Priesthood.

Finally, we met a guy named Joe Freeza (yes, like DBZ) who had taken one of the copies of the Book of Mormon we gave one of our investigators. He was very interested in it and wants to know more about it. Unfortunately, he's very very busy and is hard to get a hold of, but we're doing our best to teach him. We shall see.

The District is doing well. We're greatly improving on our exactness in obedience, and I'm really happy with the progress we are all making. We just have to keep pushing and being more diligent in our work - putting the Lord's Work in perspective, and making it a greater priority to be outside working rather than inside relaxing. We're getting there though and I'm really happy with everyone and their efforts.

Finally, we have Zone Interviews tomorrow, at the Teshie Chapel. It should be interesting; we're using Bishop's office for Pres. to do the interviews. It'll be right after our District Meeting, so I'm willing to bet that Pres. will attend that. Let's hope that all goes well!

Still in lack of paper for letters, but I promise they will come as soon as I can. I know some of you are many months over due, but I still have record of that and I will write as soon as I can.

I bear my testimony that the Book of Mormon is True. It contains the fullness of the Gospel, in a simple and plain way that we can find nowhere else. I also love this quote from Elder Oaks, concerning our purpose in life:

"The Final Judgment is not just an evaluation of the sum total of good and evil acts - what we have done. It is an acknowledgment of the final effect of our acts and thoughts - what we have become. It is not enough for anyone just to go through the motions. The commandments, ordinances, and covenants of the gospel are not a list of deposits required to be made in some heavenly account. The gospel of Jesus Christ is a plan that shows us how to become what our Heavenly Father desires us to become" (Dallin H. Oaks, "The Challenge to Become," Ensign, Nov. 2000, 32).

Only when we put forth the efforts, gain the desires, and become the person we need to become, will we gain exaltation. It is not enough to just teach the gospel - as missionaries, we must Preach the Gospel. We must have an overwhelming desire to share it with everyone in the world. This is true for both full-time missionaries and member missionaries. Everything we do should be a means to bring about the Plans and Desires of God; such is the meaning of 'thine will be done.' I know that when we make our desires those of our Heavenly Father, that is when we acquire true, complete, and eternal happiness - joy that will never end, neither in this life, nor in the life to come.

I love you all! I exhort you all to read the Book of Mormon. That is how your will can become that of our Heavenly Father's. Take care, and God bless!
